Below you will read about the 7 Artemis Fowl Characters who make the series amazing and worth reading. Eion Colfer does a fantastic job with this series and each book in the series when averaged out across the whole series has a 4-star review on GoodReads. This series would be nothing without the amazing characters the Eion Colfer created. Below, you will read about these characters’ decisions that make them and the series amazing!

Lets get on to it! Below are your favorite Artemis Fowl Characters.
1. Captain Holly Short
Holly Short is quite possibly your favorite character. She’s the only woman in the LEPrecon and throughout the series, she doesn’t change much. She is very as far as fairies go but she is much older than any human. With that age comes great maturity.

Captain Short is a good and kindhearted fairy. She is willing to disregard orders from superiors, putting her job in jeopardy, to save those that need help. It’s very clear from the first few chapters of book 1 that she is kind and empathetic. This trait carries throughout the entire series.
Holly is not only kind but brave to boot. She is in many life-threatening situations, and she comes through every time due to her training. She is often up against the likes of Trolls and other enemies, but she comes out on top. I think you would agree that she is written as an inspiration to girls everywhere who read this series.
Do you like a little romance? Holly and Artemis have a bit of an “I like you” thing going on through most of the series. it’s very fun to read about. Perhaps one of the disappointments in the series is that this ‘I like you” situation is never addressed. The series ends with a bit of cliffhanger in that regard. You can use your imagination, or perhaps Mr. Colfer will one day revisit this love story.
2. Artemis Fowl
There couldn’t be a book for you to read without Artemis Fowl. The young quirky protagonist grows a lot throughout the series. His intelligence is focused on from the very beginning as well as his greed. But he isn’t a bad kid from the beginning either. He’s a kid with a big heart that is missing his father. He is just trying to keep his family together.

Artemis starts as a very unlikeable kid. He is smarter than everyone and isn’t afraid to rub others the wrong way by letting them know just how intelligent he is. He starts with only one friend but as the series evolves, he gains more friends.
Though he is obnoxious and pompous at the beginning of the story, his big heart shines through. For example, when he kidnaps Holly before becoming her friend, he doesn’t want to hurt her. He even feels guilty for what he has done. Artemis’ character arc is one of growth in many aspects, his growing propensity for guilt is one of many.
Artemis has a hard time making friends as many intelligent kids do. Artemis finding friends throughout the story is an amazing story because he wasn’t even looking for friends. Artemis has a growing capacity for many emotions throughout the story and you will love to read his character growth throughout the series.
3. Butler
Butler is a unique name. It’s his last name as bodyguards do not tell their principals their first names. Butler is a great man and often plays the role of father figure for Artemis. Though he isn’t supposed to have any feelings at all toward Artemis as his principal, it’s clear that he sees Artemis as a friend and would do almost anything for him.

Butler is a well-trained bodyguard as are all the males in his family. He trained with Madam Ko, at her famous school for bodyguards. He has been on many missions and is trained as a soldier. Even though he is a trained soldier, he often plays the part of Artemis’ conscience.
Without Butler, there would be no growth of Artemis Fowl and Artemis would more than likely be dead because Butler gets Artemis out of many sticky situations. Butler is feared by many not just because of his imposing stature, but because he knows what he is doing in battle. He is perhaps the only human to take down a troll.
Butler is a good man, a good bodyguard, and one of the best friends that anyone could have.
4. Foaly the Centaur
Foaly is the tech genius who makes it possible for the fairies to stay efficiently hidden underground. He is responsible for most of the cool stuff that fairies have invented and without him, Opal Koboi would have taken over the world. Not only is he smart, but he is also a great friend.
Foaly is responsible for foiling Opal Koboi throughout the whole series. He outsmarts her which allows the group to be one step ahead, even when they are one step behind. He has a soft spot for Holly and speaks up for her whenever possible. Though they didn’t always get along, he was also a great friend of commander Julius Root.
Foaly does find love and marries another Centaur. She is great for him which is funny because they are opposite in many ways. It’s great that he was able to find love though. Without Foaly, Holly, Artemis, Butler, and Mulch would not have made it out of many situations.
You probably wouldn’t say Foaly is arrogant, but you would say that he wants people to know how cool the stuff he makes is. He also can’t stand it when somebody is smarter than him. This is why he constantly competes with Opal Koboi and why he doesn’t like Artemis at first. The only this worse than being outsmarted is being outsmarted by a kid.
5. Mulch Diggums
Mulch is one of a kind. He is always unapologetically himself. Always eating, as is the dwarf custom, he needs the energy to maintain his special dwarf skill. These special skills have allowed him to become not only the best thief in the fairy world, but also the best thief in the human world. Not only is he the best thief, but he is also a great friend.
Mulch Diggums does very little changing throughout the series. When he does change, he changes in the best way possible. He, much like Artemis, makes friends. These friends bring out the best in Mulch probably because he doesn’t have to give up his thieving ways but gets to use them for the good of the group.
Mulch also has some of the qualities of Butler. For example, he bails the group out of many complicated situations. He is introduced to the story as a criminal in the custody of the LEP when Commander Root offers him a deal. Help take down Artemis Fowl and get Holly back in exchange for a lighter sentence.
Mulch is a jack of all trades, he is an escape artist, thief, and burglar, but also a great friend. In the series, there is a defining moment for him as he is working for the mob in Chicago. The mob was contracted to bring Artemis Fowl to Chicago. It’s at this point, when Mulch could have run, that he decides to help his friend Artemis Fowl. I hope Mulch is one of your favorite characters!
6. Juliet Butler
Juliet is Butler’s sister, and she is like him in many respects, she is stubborn and strong. She doesn’t have the typical tastes of teenage girls as she loves fighting and WWE wrestling. She is the only person that Butler cares about more than Artemis himself. Juliet does what needs to be done so the group can accomplish its objectives, but she often does it with spin and pazzazz.
Juliet isn’t in every book in the series but in the books where she is present, there is a certain comedic relief. She is the only one allowed, and the only one who would dare, to give Butler a hard time about anything.
She decides to attend Madam Ko’s school for bodyguards and try and become the youngest graduate, the record currently held by her brother. She decides that the bodyguard life isn’t for her though and becomes a professional wrestler instead. She is an essential and fun part of the Artemis Fowl team.
7. Commander Julius Root
Like Juliet, Commander Root isn’t in all the books. He is a beloved character and a strong example of how leadership should work. He cares about his officers and treats them how they need to be treated so they can grow. It’s a shame that he’s not in every book because he is someone that everyone can look up to.

When Commander Root is first introduced into the story, he isn’t very likable…. For about five minutes that is. He is very hard on Holly which rubs the wrong way. He admits he’s hard on her because she is a girl. He immediately follows that admission with another; he wants her to be successful because she is a girl not despite it.
Commander Root is famous for his temper. His face often turns red when he gets mad or frustrated which earned him the nickname Beet Root. Mulch Diggums and Foaly were the only two who dared to tease him about anything. He was well respected and well-liked by all, including Foaly and Mulch.
He had to make the tough calls and often ordered Holly to do things that she didn’t want to do. Even though she rarely listened, He didn’t punish he more than necessary. He was a good Commander, a great leader, and a great friend.
