Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony is an easy read, but it’s also an action-packed adventure and shows what friendship is all about. This book is highly recommended from GLF books because it’s a great story and has great character development. I wouldn’t mind if more people grew and became better people like the characters in this book.

Plotline: Spoiler-Free
Artemis, in his boredom, finds a new puzzle to solve. Though the fairy people have agreed not to monitor him, Foaly decides to do it anyway. When Artemis realizes that he is being watched, he decides to sift through Foaly’s files and discovers a new puzzle to solve.
Naturally, Butler finds himself guarding Artemis in a foreign city, waiting for something to happen. Artemis hasn’t told him what will happen, He never does. Just when they think it’s time to go home, a demon materializes, and just like that the demon is gone.
Meanwhile underground Holly Short has gone into business with Mulch Diggums as private investigators. They are on the job when Commander Vinyáya pulls up and tells them to get in the car. They are brought to Section 8 headquarters. Here they are told about the secret charge of Section 8. They are the Undercover unit for the Fairy people. They are well-funded, and their main job is to deal with anything that has to do with the lost colony of demons.
Holly, now a section 8 operative, is sent to the surface to talk to Artemis because he was at the last materialization site of a Demon. When Holly catches up with Artemis, he’s trying to prove his calculations his new calculations and if he’s right, the fairy people are going to have a huge problem on their hands.
Of course, Artemis is correct, and a demon appears right where he thought one would, right when he thought it would. Unfortunately, they aren’t the only ones waiting for the demon to appear and when it does, the other team takes action to capture the demon.
This other team is led by a twelve-year-old girl named Minerva Paradizo. Minerva is a super genius just like Artemis and is on a quest to prove that there are endangered species that humans haven’t discovered yet. She is hoping to present her research to the Nobel committee and win the Nobel Prize.
This naturally causes two big problems. One, the colony of demons is heading back to earth sooner than thought, the time spell keeping them lost in time is unraveling. Two, the exposure of fairy kind is once again at stake. Artemis and Holy once again team up to save the day.
My Thoughts on Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony
This book was great. New characters are introduced which push the story to new places but first I’d like to talk about the title. The title the Lost Colony sticks out to me because in every other book I’ve read, things have only been lost in space and not time.
I’m sure there are other stories out there where people, places, or things are lost in time but as this was my first experience with a story where this is the case, I think it’s important to discuss it. If something is lost in space, it means it can be found if you look in the right place, if something is lost in time it means you can look in the correct place but if it’s the wrong time, you won’t see it. It will still be lost until the correct time. I think this is a mind-blowing concept that is a great thought exercise for not only children but adults as well.
Artemis is still growing as a person and is stepping outside himself. He is helping the fairies and all he is getting in return is a challenge to stimulate his brain. He has found that his legal activities have become slightly boring and was grateful to stumble upon this new challenge.
Holly is still herself, a highly trained soldier if not an empathetic one. She cares about others and is willing to do what she must to save as many people as she can. This book makes clear how much Artemis cares for her and how strong their bond has become. It’s not a romantic bond, at least not yet, but one of friendship and love, nonetheless.
(Spoilers Ahead)
Lastly, I want to talk about Butler. His story is much the same. He is a well-trained bodyguard who will stop at nothing to keep Artemis safe but he’s also Artemis’ friend. When Artemis tells him that he will be back, right before he disappears into time, you can feel Butler’s trust in him. And when Artemis returns three years later and sees Butler for the first time, you can feel Butler’s happiness, he was beginning to doubt that Artemis would return.
Artemis is also surprised to see that while he was gone, the world didn’t stop and wait for him.
